Gump, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York. “We found that people who reported taking no vacation for five years were at a much higher risk of heart attack.” Gump analyzed data from a nine year study of nearly 13,000 men, all between the ages of 35 and 57 who were at high risk for heart disease.

The value of vacations lies in the change of pace itself, getting your mind off your worries. “It’s taking time out from the everyday, relentless stressors,” said Gump. “Even anticipating a vacation can ease stress levels.  Vacation rids us of the bad habit that Gump describes as “vigilance.”  But a true vacation, says Gump, means truly leaving your virtual office behind. “Bring along your pager, laptop or cell phone and you won’t get the full benefit of your vacation because you are constantly on guard for potential stress.”
