Internet Use Continues To Escalate

According to the May Web Survey results reported on netcraft.com, Internet use is growing at a dizzying rate. The Internet has grown by 7.2 million hostnames so far in 2006, and continued growth at this rate would result in 17 million hostnames this year. That’s close to the record pace from 2005, when the web added 17.5 million sites.
Cybercollege.com features a quote that accurately states this trend: “History books will undoubtedly show the internet to be the most significant development in communications since Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1450. “
An article in the May issue of the Gallup Management Journal outlines significant growth expectations for the Internet. The journal features an interview with Dr. Vinton Cerf, vice president and “chief internet evangelist” for Google, in which he discusses his vision for the Internet and his goal of “getting six billion people online.”
For the last thirty years, Dr. Cerf has worked to persuade people that “more Internet is better than less Internet.” According to the GMJ interview, the current estimate of users on the Internet is roughly one billion. “When you realize that there are six billion people in the world, my reaction is we have a long way to go,” said Dr. Cerf.
“Personally, I am excited about the possibility that the Internet brings to freedom of expression,” noted Cerf. “And in my heart of hearts, I hope that the Internet will be a very powerful force to encourage and support our freedom of expression.”
As Internet use continues to grow, the economic and social impact it has will continue to astound us.
Some undeniable facts are:
- The Internet is rising in some unexpected categories. Older people and children under the age of 10 are currently strong growth sectors.
- People are using the Internet to research their buying decisions. This proves that a having a website is just as effective as having a “traditional” store.
- Business people are more influenced by the web than any other advertising medium. More than 60% of business people surveyed said the Internet is the best way for advertising to reach them
- Desk-bound office workers can’t get enough of easy to use websites. They are a captive audience for eight to ten hours a day.
