How Service Providers Use the Internet
There are hundreds of websites designed to provide information to case workers, outreach workers and others who reach out to the homeless. “FirstStep” a website and software program developed through a partnership between the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Urban Development, offers a wealth of information. FirstStep is an interactive tool that can significantly enhance case workers’ ability to help people. It offers practical tips about how to effectively interview homeless people and also helpful tips on how to steer homeless people toward the “mainstream resources” that are available for them.
Other websites teach caseworkers how to develop a “virtual life portfolio” for each of their clients that enables homeless people to store important documents and certificates that they may need to help them claim benefits, get medical help or get a job. Despite not having an address they can still access the help and support they need to get into work and training.
Because our world has become so deeply dependent upon the Internet, one must learn how to use the technological tools of the times in order to get ahead or improve their lot in life. As one homeless man put it: “The Internet is a home. It is a place to go to connect to people and get support.”
